Well, it’s January in Ohio which means one day the weather is 60 degrees and sunny and the next it’s 15 degrees and snowing. Looking for a way to warm up on those cold days or a sweet treat on the warm ones? One of our two Instant Hot Cocoas should do the trick.

While we might think of hot cocoa as a fun treat, the beverage has a long history. Around 2,000 years ago, the Mayas were believed to have created the first chocolate beverage.  By 1400 it was an essential part of Aztec culture. After Mexico introduced hot chocolate to the New World, the drink’s popularity spread to Europe. The tasty treat was even used (in the 1800s) as a treatment for ailments (like stomach diseases).

According to research, hot cocoa has been shown to be positive for your health. Cornell University conducted a study that shows that hot chocolate contains more antioxidants than wine and tea; therefore, reducing the risk of heart disease. According to a press release about the study, in a single serving of cocoa, the researchers found 611 milligrams of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) and 564 milligrams of epicatechin equivalents (ECE), compared with 340 milligrams of GAE and 163 milligrams of ECE in red wine, and 165 milligrams of GAE and 47 milligrams of ECE in green tea. It was also noted that a larger amount of antioxidants are released when the beverage is heated.

So grab your cup and a bag of our Instant Hot Cocoa – Sweet (a custom house blend, it’s sweet and spiced with clove, nutmeg and cinnamon) or Instant Hot Cocoa – Spicy (a custom house blend that’s semi sweet with a little kick). As you sip, savor the beverage’s rich history and remember – it’s good for you!
